Windows 10 External Hard Drive Not Detected

I have been told that i have to have the bios set to AHCI when installing Windows 7., When i have tried this With Windows 7 Pro 64-bit it doesnt recognize the H.D. I have also read the KB (regedit) and am thinking that that doesnt seem right for proper Windows installation. If have to go into AHCI at all. And from what i have been told is that AHCI mode is for proper writing of the drivers to the disk. And so that raises a question?, if unable to install windows originally in AHCI (no detection) how is it that windows has been installed correctly at all?

You were able to boot from the Windows 7 installation DVD? Did that require that the optical drive be on SATA 5 or 6, and that those ports be configured as IDE?

(If I understand the manual correctly, the IDE setting would be necessary.) If you got that far, had the HD connected to SATA 1-4 (configured as AHCI), and the Windows installer couldn't see the HD, that suggests that the AHCI drivers built in to Win7 don't support the AMD 990X chipset. (Which was released in 2011.) Perhaps downloading the AMD AHCI drivers (from support.asus.com, for your board) and having them on hand during the Win7 installation will help. (That wasn't necessary on any of the Intel-based desktop systems I've installed Win7 on. My oldish laptop with an AMD CPU and nVidia chipset doesn't support AHCI, so there were no issues there.) I'm not sure how useful AHCI is with a spinner. It's significant with an SSD: I believe that it's required for TRIM support. Incidentally, I've long preferred to install Win7 from a bootable USB drive.

Goes much quicker than from a DVD, even if the USB flash drive isn't a fast one. Thankyou for responding, I have not proceeded with anything yet, what i have done here is provided the facts.
