Dream Koala 'Odyssey' [Splendid] Yndi Ferreira DaSilva, or Dream Koala as he’s more commonly known, makes music that feels important, and his new three-track EP, 'Odyssey,' is no exception. With each song featuring interlaced guitar melodies, carefully chosen textures, and some well-timed silence, Dream Koala has arrived at a sound that is all at once ancient and groundbreaking. It’s at this intersection of musical themes from a bygone era, and experimental production work, that he’s decided to remain for the duration of the EP, and all three songs take advantage of this unique direction to the fullest. The tracks are often muted, almost as if he’s figured out a way to sand off the jagged edges of sound, but every once in a while, DaSilva unceremoniously jerks the listener out of the fuzzy stupor he so artfully just lulled them into.

It’s these little bits of audio dissonance which create a tension in Odyssey that never really lets the listener get too comfortable. Like a good author, Dream Koala’s sound vocabulary is a lot bigger than yours, and when he gets creative with the track, you’re forced to really work to appreciate what’s going on. Meet him halfway though, and the reward is a listening experience unlike any other. Odyssey isn’t easy.
